Vestibular Screening—
Putting together the Puzzle
Patients who are at risk of falling or are experiencing dizziness
present a
complex challenge
to healthcare professionals due to the
multitude
of
potential causes.
With the help of the HUR platform, clinicians can quickly identify
patients who are at risk of falling by utilizing the
subjective
and
objective
screening tools provided by the HUR platform.
The HUR Screening protocol consists of
four
components, which can be performed in under
ten minutes
—the Two-Condition Romberg test, Limits of Stability test, completed
Medical History form and completed Vestibular History form.
The Romberg tests, which compare your patient’s performance to a
normative database,
provide good insight into potential underlying issues of balance.
Patients with
Unilateral
or
Bilateral Loss,
for example, exhibit a dependence on visual and surface cues. Absent
visual cues, their stationary sway and sway velocity dramatically
change. Limits of Stability compares the patient’s
stability zone
in
four
quadrants to height related norms. A limited stability base requires
adaptation on the patient’s part, and can
lead
to
Fall Risk.
The final puzzle pieces involve gathering an
accurate vestibular history
for the patient. Using the provided forms, clinicians can quickly
perform the necessary detective work that helps identify problems and
potential causes.
Duration
of dizziness, for example, can point to certain causes and clearly
identify
the need for further testing.
